WRITERS IN THE SCHOOLS (WITS) at The Cabin supports creative writing enrichment in 3rd-12th grade classrooms throughout the Treasure Valley. During the school year, The Cabin employs professional local writers—poets, novelists, playwrights, and journalists—to teach semester- or school-year-long writing residencies in schools, juvenile detention centers, and community learning centers. Through active, imaginative writing experiences under the mentorship of The Cabin’s teaching-writers, WITS engages students in the pleasure and power of reading and writing.
CAMBIA is our annual anthology of the year’s best writing by WITS students. Students who are selected by their teaching-writers to have their work honored with publication in Cambia will receive a copy of the publication and are invited to read their work aloud at our year-end reading and FREE EVENT on the evening of Wednesday, 5/17. The program will last about 1 hour each for the two different grade levels and include time for students to introduce their family members to the Cabin teaching-writer they worked with at their school.
Teachers, families, and friends are encouraged to attend in support of youth creative writing! Refreshments will be served. The schedule of readings is as follows:
- 5:30-6:00 pm: Book distribution begins
- 6:00-7:00 pm: Published WITS students in grades 3-9 receive anthologies and read their work
- 7:30-8:30 pm: Published WITS students in grades 10-12 receive anthologies and read their work
