Emily Pittinos is the March and April writer in residence at the Library! at Bown Crossing! Join her and interact with Vox Poplar, a large, sculptural, scroll of paper with a bas-relief image of Cottonwood trees carved into the face that feeds into a manual typewriter.

About Emily:

Emily Pittinos is a Great Lakes poet and essayist currently teaching in Boise, ID. An Associate Editor for Poetry Northwest, Pittinos has received support from Vermont Studio Center and from Washington University in St. Louis, where she also served as the Senior Fellow in Poetry. Her recent work appears, or will soon appear, in Beloit Poetry Journal, Denver Quarterly, Michigan Quarterly Review, New England Review, Ninth Letter, Ploughshares, The Adroit Journal, The Iowa Review and elsewhere.

On her approach to Vox Poplar:

Place has always been at the center of my work, but this obsession with landscape has recently become particularly strong. During my time with Vox Poplar, I plan to construct a hybrid work of nonfiction and poetry that asks how a description of landscape may be a window into one’s emotional world. This work will incorporate notes from my past journals as well as new language inspired by library patrons. I would like to ask visitors to contribute words and phrases (anonymously or not) about their own observations, associations, and memories of landscape (perhaps specifically that of “home”), which I’ll try to incorporate into the Vox Poplar project. Collaboration with our community feels like an important piece of this process, and I believe that these gifts of language will result in a deeper exploration of Place.
