About this 6-week workshop:

Patti Smith is a renowned multi-genre artist who has touched the lives of many creatives; both established and aspiring. Inspired by her intimate and powerful lecture to Boise this past October, this workshop will continue in the spirit of Patti’s wish for us that we try and “stay balanced in unbalanced times.” By looking at the work of her artistic influences, including William Blake, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Duras, Motown, just to name a few) and her work as an influence itself, writers are welcome to respond to prompts in any genre they see fit; nonfiction, stories, and more. Each class will be split between examining influences, and workshopping new work inspired by the previous week’s conversations and readings. Here’s a tentative schedule for each week’s themes:

Week 1: Patti and Writing the Early Stories

Week 2: Patti and the Poets

Week 3: Patti and the Art World

Week 4: Patti and Music as Influence

Week 5: Patti and Prose

Week 6: Patti and her work in the Current Moment

·       February 10th
