Very short stories (and sometimes essays)—often called flash fiction—are fun to write because you can finish a piece of writing that feels satisfyingly complete in a limited amount of time. Learning from Other Writers: A Writing Workshop with Boise City Writer-in-Residence Don Zancanella
I like collecting statements other writers have made about writing. Sometimes they inspire me, sometimes they make me rethink my practices, and sometimes they annoy me, but I almost always find them thought-provoking.
In this workshop we’ll look at a number of remarks made by various writers (often very famous ones) and consider how they might help us think about our own work.

Rebecca F. Kuang is the #1 New York Times and #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of the Poppy War trilogy, Babel: An Arcane History, Yellowface, and Katabasis. Her work has won the Nebula, Locus, Crawford, and British Book Awards.
A Marshall Scholar, she has an MPhil in Chinese Studies from Cambridge and an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from Oxford. She is now pursuing a PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale, where she studies diaspora, contemporary Sinophone literature, and Asian American literature.

Pitching and Getting Published offers a peak into the business side of writing and how to share your work with editors and publications.
Guided by Kim, participants will learn strategies for identifying the right outlets for their work, crafting strong query letters and pitches, and navigating the submission process for both articles and books. The workshop will also cover how to tailor pitches to different audiences, the etiquette of working with editors, and tips for building resilience in the face of rejection. Story Structure: A Writing Workshop with Boise City Writer-in-Residence
Story Structure is an interactive writing workshop that explores how the deliberate sequence of revelation—what writers reveal to the reader, and when—shapes a story’s impact.
Guided by Kim, participants will learn to see the architecture of a story and design a blueprint for one of their own. Together, the group will dissect a published story to identify the components of scene, summary, exposition, and reflection. Using the standard narrative arc as a starting point, Kim will also introduce alternative story structures and tools to experiment with sequencing to discover new possibilities for their stories.
