Charles Bukowski was wrong when he wrote “if [writing] doesn’t come bursting out of you / in spite of everything, / don’t do it.”
Being tortured by a bottomless fount of language and inspiration shouldn’t have to be a prerequisite for being a writer — in fact, writers suffer from the opposite issue so much that “writer’s block” could be considered cliché. What are the alternatives to giving up on writing when the words aren’t coming? How do we prove Bukowski wrong and meet our desire to write when we feel we have nothing to say?
In this six-week generative writing workshop, we’ll face the blank page and try on the prompts, experiments, and practices used by poets and writers such as Anne Boyer, Audre Lorde, Bernadette Mayer, Sheila Heti, and CAConrad with the goal of playing and creating new work. Then, we will examine our own writing to develop a new ritual, prompt, process, or experiment to use on your own and share with the group.
This workshop is open to writers of all genres as long as you’re open to engaging with poetry. The time commitment required outside of the workshop container will be less than an hour a week, so this workshop is ideal for writers who feel like they don’t have time to write. If you do have time to write, optional experiments and readings will be provided.
