Writing the Future: a high school workshop w/Natanya Biskar
- The Cabin 801 South Capitol Boulevard Boise, ID, 83702 United States (map)
This Workshop is for Grades 9-12
What will the future bring?
Flying cars, re-animated ghosts, or hyper- intelligent squirrels determined to take over the world? Robot nannies, Venus colonies, or a talking parrot who has become a philosopher on the subject of climate change? The good news: in fiction, the future can be all of the above! Through writing exercises, readings, and interactive games, we will explore speculative fiction and all of its weird and glorious possibilities. You will learn and practice the elements of craft—character, plot, detail, scene, and more—in order to create an original story of speculative fiction, a story about the future that shines a light on the strangeness of the present.
Tuition: $177or $147 for Cabin Members
Dates: July 26th - 30th from 1 – 4 PM

As 21st century writers, we’re often advised to get offline—silence our phones, close our tabs, and swear off social media breaks, lest our attention spans wither away in this increasingly digital world. But what if this is the same world we’re writing about? What if our characters are also compulsively checking their social media feeds, swiping though dating apps, or Googling life’s unanswerable questions? How do we realistically capture the present day—its constant flurry of information, its dizzying rates of technological advancement—while still eliciting meaning and hope for readers? And how do we maintain a clear-headed writing habit along the way?

There’s nothing quite like using words to create a world that didn’t exist before. In this workshop we’ll do some experiments with fiction writing that demonstrate how invented characters can quickly begin to take on a life of their own.
